Thomas Karanas
About
Thomas Karanas brings extensive experience and passion for soccer to the Western New York community. Over the years, he has played a pivotal role in developing local youth talent, building programs from the ground up, and fostering a love for the game in players of all ages.
Leadership in Coaching
Thomas served as the Director of Coaching for the Clarence Soccer Club for over seven years. During his tenure, he took pride in helping many players not only excel in their high school careers but also continue on to play at the collegiate level—an impressive accomplishment for a local club committed to keeping soccer affordable and accessible to all.
He notably coached Clarence High School’s last All-American, Ross Showalter, and helped 15 players transition into the college game. Under his leadership, Clarence’s travel program enrollment surpassed that of all other clubs in Western New York while maintaining a strong emphasis on community.
Thomas also launched the Pepper United 3v3 Tournament, which raised thousands of dollars to support the family of a beloved community member who had passed away.
Building Youth Programs
Thomas was instrumental in developing Clarence Soccer Club’s summer camp program. Through his engaging station-based training model, enrollment more than tripled year-over-year. His approach blended fun and skill-building, helping young athletes learn the fundamentals, make new friends, and develop a lifelong love for the game.
Later, as Director of Soccer Operations for the Delaware Soccer Club, Thomas prioritized community connections while strengthening the organization’s future. The house program saw a 35% enrollment increase, and parent feedback was overwhelmingly positive.
He also spearheaded a fundraiser with Big Hero Lucky Fin that helped 10-year-old Josiah receive a prosthetic arm—a story featured on Daytime Buffalo (Channel 4 News).
College Coaching Success
Thomas joined the Buffalo State Bengals Men’s Soccer coaching staff in 2013 and also served as assistant manager of the school’s fitness center. He directed Buffalo State’s annual summer camp and was part of a historic coaching staff named Senior College Men’s East Regional Staff of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches.
That 2017 season was one for the record books: Buffalo State made its first NCAA playoff appearance since 1984, posted a school-record 11 shutouts, went undefeated in SUNYAC conference play, built a 15-game unbeaten streak, and rose to #13 in the national rankings. The coaching staff was honored at the College Coaches Awards Reception during the 71st annual United Soccer Coaches Convention and was even placed on the ballot for National Staff of the Year.
Playing Career & Education
As a four-year player for the Buffalo State Bengals (2008–2011), Thomas captained the team during his junior and senior years. He was a Buffalo State Scholar-Athlete, a two-time All-SUNYAC All-Academic Team and Commissioner’s List honoree, and was voted team MVP as a freshman.
A native of Tonawanda, NY, Thomas earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in criminal justice from Buffalo State, where he was inducted into the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.
He served as Buffalo State's head assistant coach from 2013–2016, continuing as a volunteer Coach since 2016-present.
